Well well well, it’s only been 3 years since I last posted. 3 long years since the juggernaut, iconic, incredible, awe-full production of Fela started rehearsing. Boy, what a ride…….to keep things brief we are back to Broadway for a limited run of 4 weeks after a year and half of Broadway, 3 Tony Awards, International tours to Lagos, Amsterdam, Plymouth & London England, AND a 10 month US Tour. Yea, I know……..that’s a lot. Let’s see, what else: 2 films, some commercials, some choreo things and lots lots lots of massages :-). Anyways, a 3 year hiatus IS a long time, and something just told me this production would just be too demanding to document on a weekly basis. Full disclosure: I was correct.
So what compels me to revisit these vowels and consonants? Well there’s a time for everything and everything in it’s time! I often have said to castmates Equus was a pleasure but Fela is a treasure! This might only make sense to me but it is SO TRUE. Fela has made everyone involved dig deep, tap into reserves, learn, grow, fight, fall down, get back up, be patient, dance barefoot, learn to say “Yab Dem” and much, much more! It has been such an opportunity to grow and for that I am grateful. Not just as an actor/artist but as a person. So…in closing yes we are back, I am back, and like my Tio always says; The Best Is Yet To Come” Here we go:
Fela Tour Stuff 🙂

I know it’s been forever, but it’s the summer and I’ve had to rest, prepare, be a bum, all of the above. However, here’s a small thing done a few weeks back as park of Dancing In The Streets’ City Park performances.
St. Mary\’s Park, NYC
Otherwise, it’s summer!!! Yay! Although the same can be said for the coming fall season………..HERE WE GO!!! HAve a good one folks.

So, week 2. More of the same. But the warm up we do w Maija Garcia (associate choreographer) is incredible. Very similar in some ways to the Fin warm up for Equus, but longer, less breakneck running, more breathing/stretching, and most importantly more music!!!!!! LOL. Another interesting tidbit, we re using the EXACT same rehearsal studio we used for Equus too. The similarities end there though :-). Too much to get into for now, but basically there is tons of singing….. did I say tons, lots of dance/movement/staging…….yup. The band & music is INCREDIBLE. If you don’t know anything about Fela Anikulapo Kuti do some homework, google, wiki, Barnes & Nobles/Border’s Bookstore, whatever it is you need to. I’m saying: come on y’all get with it. Fix Ya Faces!!!!!!!!! LOL. Suffice to say it will be a very unique show for Broadway. LOL…….trust me. Oh did I say Bill T Jones is directing & choreographing? No joke. Ya have NO clue. It’s Not A Game x 50…………
Lets’ see what else…..well we lost a musical icon, genius, trailblazer, trendsetter and much more this past week! Michael Jackson left to join the ancestors. No matter how you look at him, he changed the world with his art and opened people’s hearts, and that is a great thing, right? Right!!!!! We should be thankful because NOTHING is promised nor guaranteed. So with all that being said, and more left to meander between the lines, phrases and paragraphs let’s see what this week has to offer. Or what I can offer the week 🙂

So, here we are. First week about to start. It’s going down, and not a game. Yup, short and sweet, but yes very sweet 🙂

Hi. Greetings. Hey. Alafia. Aloha. Bonsoir. Cheers. You get the drift. Okay so, yea I know it’s been like 2 months. But y’all know how it gets. If there’s nothing to say, I won’t say anything. However, I am on the verge of really having something to say…… like something for real lol. So wanted to get the ol fingers warmed up again :-). When things go according to plan, a week or so should be sufficient to clear things up oooooooo. Until then. Peace.

Okay, so way back when I posted about our British Consul General sponsored event we were invited to. Remember? Come on folk……….Equus # 15 (11.24.08) Pay attention people, come on! :-). Anyway, that evening I was approached about taking part in a fashion show called Dressed To Kilt. I knew what it was, had heard of it, and thought it would be fun. You know how it goes:
DTK: “We’d love for you to be involved.” AO: “Sounds great, let me know when it is and we can make it happen.”
Then you never hear back from anyone LMAO………However in this case I did hear back and after a few emails, calls and casting issues back & forth we got it all together. Tyrone, Collin and I were able to do it and all I can say is WOWITWASCRAZYFUNANDKILTSARECOMFY!!!!!!!!!! For real. Okay a few things: Was happy my kilt stayed down, but I didn’t go commando so it was still all good, “Disturbia” was our pre-show song therefore it was a fitting choice for us ex-Horses to use, boy oh boy do the Scots know how to pah-tay and Sir Sean Connery himself requested to met us and gave us props as only he could!!!!! Special thanks to Geoffrey Carroll and Betsey Heckert for making it all possible. So without any further ado……..
Dressed To Kilt
Now I really am expecting comments on this one 🙂

Well, yea it has been a while, huh? Yes it has. Time just gets away from you if you’re not careful and it seems as if I was quite careless :-). In any case let’s see: The President is trying to save our economy, I did a voiceover for a new MTV reality show on the rapper/mc TI, it seems as if the weather is finally starting to get warm, Facebook has changed their layout again and people are losing their minds about it lol, stocks are down, A-Rod got caught for his steroid use a few years ago, Montreal has invited me to their main dance event as a judge & instructor again, saw Watchmen (kinda lol) and the new McDonald’s Filet O Fish commercial is the silliest, funniest thing I’ve seen in a while.
So…… let’s talk about the MTV thing for a super hot second: funny thing hearing your voice played back in your ear, ya know? The show chronicles TI’s desire/plan to intervene in the lives of “troubled” youth prior to his sentencing on gun charges. Stop laughing, the show seems to be a different kind of experience because some of the youth really are “troubled”. Really. I used the ” ” because when you’re a gun fanatic who has already shot a few folk and had the favor returned in kind I’d call that troubled. Or if you have been in juvenile detention so many times you’re about to be sent to a REAL prison at 18…..yea I’d call that troubled. Anyways, I think it’s better than most of those type of shows. Okay back to the crux of it………it was the 2nd best gig ever ( now ya know which gig was the best, right? LOL). You walk in, get the script, prepare the vocal cords with a rigorous set of yodels, screams, and warm libations and then (drum roll) READ! Then read again, and again, until ya get it right. Gotta love it.
There is a place up North I like to call Montreal: actually everybody calls it that :-); and it is beautiful. Bee u tee Full. Just in case you haven’t been I highly recommend it, from my 1st trip there I felt it was a special place. So it is always great to head back, and see the city, old friends and eat as much as I can. They have a huge dance event called Bust A Move (BAM) that has workshops on various styles, and a HIGHLY competitive contest that has people from all over the world. So once again Spicy A has extended an invitation to take part in the festivities and after 2 seconds of thought I agreed LOL. More to come on that after the event…….yea yea yea I’ll post pictures.
Alors, that’s about it for now. Some folk were talking about Lorenzo’s show Humor Abuse. Well stop talking, and go see it. The reviews came in and were raves, raves I tell ya. Personally I called it WAY before the “critics” did. I wouldn’t be surprised if they got their intial inspiration from my reviews. COPYCATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So all is well y’all and spring is in the air. YES!!!!!!!!
